In an industry where games often take years to develop and are designed to keep players hooked for hundreds of hours, a small team proved that speed and simplicity can still win big. Tim Badylak and Kristoffer Andersson, the developers behind the RV travel game "RV There Yet?", recently opened up about the unexpected success of their project. The game, which was built in just nine weeks, has gone on to sell millions of copies, leaving even its creators stunned.
"You just look at the number and go, 'What happened?'" Badylak said, reflecting on the sales figures. The game was originally conceived as a small, niche project for players who enjoy the slow life of driving an RV through scenic landscapes. There were no grand plans for a live-service model or endless content updates. Instead, the team focused on a tight, polished experience that respected the player's time.
Andersson noted that the success challenged the current industry trend of "forever games" -- titles that demand constant engagement through battle passes and daily chores. "Not every title has to be a forever game," he explained. "Sometimes people just want a complete, satisfying journey they can finish and remember." The developers believe that the game's honest, no-frills design resonated with an audience tired of being locked into endless progression loops.
The pair emphasized that the nine-week development cycle was not a gimmick but a deliberate choice. By limiting scope and avoiding feature creep, they were able to deliver a game that felt finished at launch. The result was a word-of-mouth hit that proved a small team with a clear vision can still break through in a market dominated by billion-dollar franchises. For Badylak and Andersson, the lesson is simple: make something you love, finish it, and let the players decide.
