Dead Space Co-Creator Glen Schofield Steps Away from Games

Glen Schofield, the veteran game developer best known for co-creating the survival horror classic Dead Space, has announced his retirement. Schofield, who also served as general manager of Visceral Games and founded Striking Distance Studios, is ending a career that spanned more than three decades in the industry.

Schofield's journey began at EA, where he worked on titles like The Godfather and eventually led the team that created Dead Space in 2008. The game became a landmark in horror gaming, known for its tense atmosphere, strategic dismemberment mechanics, and immersive storytelling. He later oversaw Visceral Games during the development of Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3, along with other projects.

After leaving EA, Schofield founded Striking Distance Studios in 2019 under the Krafton umbrella. The studio's first major release, The Callisto Protocol, launched in 2022 as a spiritual successor to Dead Space. While the game received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially, it showcased Schofield's continued commitment to the survival horror genre.

In a statement, Schofield expressed gratitude for the teams he worked with and the fans who supported his projects. He did not specify plans for what comes next, but indicated he looks forward to spending time with family. His departure marks the end of an era for a developer who helped shape modern horror gaming.
