There was a time when reading about video games felt like getting a backstage pass to a world you loved. You picked up a magazine or opened a site and found long, thoughtful pieces about design, about the people making the games, about why a certain level worked or failed. It felt like craft. It felt like the writers actually played the damn things.
Now it feels like watching a press release get mangled in a game of telephone. The whole industry of games media has turned into a machine that produces hot takes, outrage bait, and thinly veiled advertising. Every week there is another scandal about a developer being bullied off social media because someone misread a tweet. Every major release is either a masterpiece or a disaster, with no room in between. And if a game is broken at launch, you get twenty think pieces about "crunch culture" and "toxic fandom" before anyone actually talks about the frame rate.
The frustrating part is that the good writers are still out there. They are buried under a mountain of listicles and "10 things we learned" previews. But the editors and the algorithms do not reward patience. They reward speed and anger. So we get headlines designed to make you furious before you even click. We get reviews that read like they were written by someone who played two hours on a review build and then copied the patch notes.
I miss the days when a writer could say "this game is flawed but interesting" without being accused of shilling for the publisher. I miss when a negative review was a reasoned argument, not a call to arms. The entire thing has become a content farm, and the people who actually care about games are drowning in the noise. It is exhausting to watch, and it is even more exhausting to read.
