Epic CEO says connecting game economies is industry's only hope

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has made a bold claim about the future of video games: the only way for the industry to survive and thrive is to connect its disparate game economies. In a recent interview, Sweeney argued that the current model, where each game operates as a closed financial system, is unsustainable and ultimately harmful to players and developers alike.

Sweeney pointed to the success of Fortnite and the broader Epic Games Store as proof of concept. He envisions a future where items, currencies, and digital goods can move freely between different games and platforms. This would allow a sword earned in one title to be used in another, or a cosmetic skin purchased in a battle royale to be worn in a racing game. According to Sweeney, this interoperability would create a massive, unified digital marketplace that benefits everyone.

The CEO warned that without this shift, the industry risks stagnation. He criticized the current trend of walled gardens, where companies like Apple and Google take a significant cut of all transactions. By connecting economies, developers could bypass these gatekeepers and offer players more value. Sweeney believes this is not just a good idea, but an existential necessity for the medium's long-term health. He sees a future where player investment in a game is not lost when they move on, but rather carried with them into new experiences.
