Third Nintendo-Illumination Film Confirmed for 2028 Release

Universal Pictures has officially slated a third animated feature from the ongoing collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination for release in 2028. The announcement, embedded within the studio’s broader theatrical schedule, confirms that the partnership will continue to expand the cinematic universe based on Nintendo’s iconic characters.

The first two films in the series—The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 (set for 2026)—have proven to be massive commercial successes, with the 2023 installment grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. The new 2028 project remains officially untitled, but speculation is mounting that it may focus on Donkey Kong. A copyright filing earlier this year hinted that the creative team, led by director Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, is developing a spin-off centered on the beloved ape character. Donkey Kong played a prominent role in the first film, voiced by Seth Rogen, and his expanded presence in the sequel has fueled rumors of a standalone adventure.

Nintendo and Illumination have not yet confirmed the plot or casting details for the 2028 release. However, the rapid scheduling of a third film underscores the companies’ confidence in the franchise’s longevity and audience appeal. With the next installment already in production, fans can expect a steady stream of animated Nintendo content for years to come.
