The life simulation game Paralives has reached a major milestone, selling one million copies within its first month of Early Access on Steam. The game, which first added a Steam page back in 2019, was largely funded through a successful Patreon campaign that brought in roughly $50,000 per month over several years.
The 15-person team, led by Alex Masse, built the game on that cumulative $3 million in Patreon funding. Their approach was slow and steady, and it paid off. Only 6.5 percent of Steam units were refunded, which is well below the 9.5 percent median from early 2025. Players averaged 5 hours and 30 minutes of playtime, with the average sitting at 11 hours and 40 minutes. The game also maintained a 90 percent positive review rating.
Several factors drove the game's success. The developers built a trusting community over years of open development. They promised never to sell paid DLC, only free expansions. That move set them apart from competitors. The modding scene also took off faster than expected. Within the first month, the Steam Workshop had close to 25,000 items, including camera tweaks, starter homes, and cosmetic packs.
The game's launch day saw 78,000 concurrent players on Steam. Wishlist additions stayed strong even weeks after launch, with about 25,000 new additions per day. That long tail of interest suggests the game will continue to grow, especially as it moves toward its full 1.0 release.
Paralives now faces the challenge of keeping players engaged while competing with the massive content library of The Sims 4. But its focused approach and loyal fanbase give it a solid foundation. The developers have paused all Patreon pledges and plan to make the entire project history public, turning years of weekly updates into an archive for fans.
