A surprise reveal at the Xbox Showcase introduced a first-person shooter that feels like a dark fusion of BioShock and Houdini-era stagecraft. Instead of plasmids or tonics, players wield trick cards and sleight of hand against supernatural threats. The devil, naturally, has a hand in the deal.
The game, titled Magicians: The Devil's Deal, drops players into a gritty world where illusionists battle otherworldly forces using actual stage magic. The setting leans heavily on early 20th century aesthetics, all gas lamps, velvet curtains, and smoky back rooms. Early footage showed a player character flicking cards like razor blades, vanishing from sight, and pulling impossible objects from thin air to attack enemies.
Combat looks fast and tactical. You are not just shooting bullets. You are misdirecting, teleporting, and using the environment as a prop. The BioShock comparison comes from the sense of being a fragile but powerful figure in a hostile, beautifully decaying world. The developers seem to lean into that atmospheric dread, with eerie music and shadowy figures lurking in the wings.
Magicians: The Devil's Deal is scheduled for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2027. It will be available on Game Pass from day one.
