YOUNGSTOWN - The Champion Local School District has filed an updated lawsuit, pushing a federal judge to order technology companies to alter core features in popular video games such as Roblox. The legal action, now expanded with new demands, targets what the district calls addictive design elements that harm student behavior and drain school resources.
The original complaint centered on the financial and disciplinary toll these games take on the district. But the latest filing goes further, requesting court-ordered changes to game mechanics like loot boxes, auto-play loops, and notification systems that encourage constant play. School officials argue these features are deliberately engineered to keep children engaged for hours, leading to classroom disruptions, lost learning time, and increased costs for counseling and tech support.
"The games are not just distractions. They are built to hook kids," a district representative said in the filing. The lawsuit specifically names Roblox Corporation and other developers, claiming their products violate state nuisance laws by creating a public burden. The district wants the court to force companies to disable certain in-game purchases and limit playtime by default for minor accounts.
Legal experts say the case is unusual because it asks a judge to redesign commercial software rather than just seek financial damages. The district argues that monetary compensation alone would not solve the root problem. A hearing on the updated complaint is expected later this year.
